# Sheet Metal Mechanic/Tinsmith

Part of the Metalwork Merit Badge Digital Resource Guide: [Introduction & Overview](https://merit-badge.university/merit-badges/metalwork/guide/index.md)

*5. Sheet Metal / Tinsmith*

> **5.** After completing the first four requirements, complete ONE of the following options: **Option 1—Sheet Metal Mechanic/Tinsmith**

This path starts with flat sheet metal and ends with finished objects that hold their shape because you measured, cut, bent, and joined them accurately. Tinsmithing teaches planning and precision. A good result depends less on brute force and more on layout, clean edges, and the right sequence of operations.

## What You'll Complete

- **[Req 5a1 — Tinsmith Tools](https://merit-badge.university/merit-badges/metalwork/guide/req5a1/)**: Learn the basic tools and what each one does.
- **[Req 5a2 — Sketching Your Sheet Metal Objects](https://merit-badge.university/merit-badges/metalwork/guide/req5a2/)**: Plan two objects with dimensions before cutting anything.
- **[Req 5a3 — Cutting, Bending & Joining](https://merit-badge.university/merit-badges/metalwork/guide/req5a3/)**: Make two objects using core sheet-metal techniques, including a riveted component and surface protection when needed.

## How This Path Builds

Tinsmithing rewards order. First you learn the tools so you know what each one is for. Then you sketch and measure so your patterns make sense. Only then do you cut and form the metal. If you skip ahead, you usually waste material.

> **Tip**
>
> In sheet metal work, "close enough" often becomes "does not fit." Measure carefully, mark clearly, and check each bend before making the next one.

You are ready to start with the toolset that makes flat metal manageable.
