> **5c.** Action shot

An action shot captures movement at the moment it matters. That could mean freezing the peak of a jump, catching the instant a ball leaves a hand, or following motion with just enough blur to show speed.

### Pick the right kind of action

The best subjects are easy to predict and repeat:

- running or biking
- sports drills
- a dog catching a toy
- a Scout chopping kindling safely with supervision
- someone jumping over a puddle or log

### Timing matters more than luck

Start watching before the action reaches its best point. If you wait until after you see the big moment, you are often already too late.

If your camera supports burst mode, use it. Taking several shots quickly increases the chance that one frame will capture the peak moment.

> **Safety First!**
>
> Stay out of the action zone. Do not stand where a player, bike, tool, or animal might hit you. Safe position comes first, even if it means a less dramatic angle.

> **Tip**
>
> Background matters in action photography. A cleaner background makes movement easier to read. If the background is messy, the subject can disappear even when your timing is good.

When you present this photo, explain whether you tried to stop motion cleanly or show speed through blur.
