# 4x4 Square Climbing Tower

Part of the Pioneering Merit Badge Digital Resource Guide: [Introduction & Overview](https://merit-badge.university/merit-badges/pioneering/guide/index.md)

*9. Full-Size Projects*

> **9.** Working in a group, (or individually with the help of your counselor) build a full size pioneering structure, using one of the following designs in the Pioneering merit badge pamphlet:Carefully plan the project, assembling and organizing all the materials, referring to the points under Safe Pioneering, and complying with the height restrictions in the Guide to Safe Scouting. **4x4 Square Climbing Tower**

This option teaches the most about vertical structure behavior. A climbing tower looks impressive, but it also demands the most discipline about bracing, anchoring, supervision, and height restrictions.

### Why teams choose this option

- They want a dramatic project with obvious engineering challenges.
- They want to study how a square frame resists twist and sway.
- They have strong adult supervision and a site appropriate for height.

> **Safety First!**
>
> Height changes everything. Follow the Guide to Safe Scouting, your counselor's instructions, and all inspection limits exactly. Do not improvise extra height or extra use cases.

> **Be Prepared! The tower starts to sway during inspection**
>
> - **Clear everyone away from the structure.**
> - **Inspect anchors, braces, and the squareness of the frame.**
> - **Do not climb until the cause is found and corrected.**
> - **If needed, scale the project down instead of forcing the design to work.**
