Career Pathways in Wildland Fire
1. Wildland Firefighter / Hotshot Crew Member
- Duties: Digging fireline, constructing fuel breaks, managing burnout operations, and performing mop-up.
- Training & Education: High school diploma, NWCG S-130/S-190 wildland certification, and rigorous physical pack test (45-lb pack over 3 miles in < 45 minutes).
- Career Growth: Crew Member → Squad Boss → Single Resource Boss → Crew Boss → Incident Commander.
2. Wildland Fire Ecologist / Forester
- Duties: Designing prescribed fire plans, studying plant regeneration post-fire, and managing forest health projects.
- Training & Education: Bachelor’s degree in Forestry, Fire Ecology, Environmental Science, or Natural Resource Management.
- Career Growth: Junior Field Forester → District Silviculturist → Fire Management Officer (FMO).
3. Smokejumper / Helitack Specialist
- Duties: Parachuting into remote wilderness areas or rappelling from helicopters to provide initial attack on remote lightning fires.
- Training & Education: Minimum 1–2 years of hotshot crew experience, specialized parachute/rappelling training, and extreme physical conditioning.
4. Fire Prevention Specialist / Fire Warden
- Duties: Conducting community Firewise inspections, enforcing burn bans, and leading public fire safety education.
- Training & Education: Degree or coursework in Fire Science, Public Administration, or Forestry.
