Uncontrolled megafires in recent years have burned between 7 million and 10 million acres annually in the U.S., damaging timberland, watersheds, and urban neighborhoods.

Requirement 2a: Commercial Forest Products

High-intensity wildfires destroy valuable sawtimber and paper pulp resources, wiping out decades of forest growth in hours. Beyond timber loss, fires destroy forestry infrastructure—including logging roads, processing mills, and replanted nurseries—causing severe economic losses for rural forest communities and driving up building material costs nationwide.

Catastrophic canopy fires destroy nesting trees, cover vegetation, and food sources for wildlife. When intense fires burn off the forest floor, rain washes ash, sediment, and heavy metals directly into mountain streams, suffocating fish gills, burying spawning gravels, and altering water temperatures for aquatic species like trout and salmon.

Extreme wildfire temperatures vaporize organic soil matter and burn deep into root systems, creating a waxy, water-repellent layer in the upper soil known as hydrophobic soil. When post-fire rains fall on hydrophobic soils, water cannot soak in—leading to flash flooding, mudslides, and severe topsoil erosion that contaminates municipal drinking water reservoirs.

Wildfires force long-term closures of national parks, state forests, hiking trails, campgrounds, and scenic rivers. Burned areas remain dangerous for years due to falling dead trees (snags), landslide risks, and damaged bridges, severely impacting local outdoor tourism and outdoor recreation businesses.

As housing expands into natural landscapes, wildfires destroy thousands of homes, commercial buildings, utility grids, and communication towers each year. The tragic loss of human life, emergency evacuation trauma, and economic displacement place immense stress on community emergency services and insurance markets.

Requirement 2f: Air Quality and Public Health

Wildfire smoke contains fine particulate matter (PM2.5), carbon monoxide, volatile organic compounds, and toxic chemicals from burned structures. PM2.5 particles penetrate deep into human lungs and bloodstreams, triggering asthma attacks, cardiovascular distress, and respiratory illnesses hundreds of miles downwind from active fires.
