Personal Protective Equipment
A structural firefighter running into a burning building wears about 45 pounds of turnout gear and a self-contained breathing apparatus, and is inside for maybe 20 minutes. A wildland firefighter may hike three miles uphill with a 45-pound pack and then swing a tool for 14 hours in 95-degree heat. Those are completely different problems, so the gear is completely different too.
That trade-off is the key to this requirement. Wildland personal protective equipment (PPE) is designed to buy time against radiant heat, embers, cuts, and falling objects while still letting a person work hard all day without dying of heat stress. It is not designed to let anyone walk through flames.
The Full Kit, Head to Toe
Hard hat
A lightweight helmet with a chin strap that keeps it on when you look down or run. It protects against falling limbs and rolling rock — the most common serious hazards on a fireline are things coming down from above, not flames. Many crews use color to identify roles at a glance, and helmets carry a headlamp bracket and often a shroud attachment.
Eye protection
Safety glasses or goggles rated for impact. Between flying chips from tool work, blowing ash, smoke, and dust from helicopter rotor wash, firefighters have their eyes attacked constantly. Goggles seal better in heavy ash and rotor wash; glasses breathe better and fog less on a long hike.
Flame-resistant shirt and pants
The famous yellow shirt and green pants are made of aramid fiber (Nomex is the best-known brand) or another flame-resistant fabric. They do not burn, melt, or drip when exposed to flame, and they self-extinguish. That property is what buys a firefighter the seconds needed to move out of a heat pulse.
Two details matter enormously and often get missed:
- The fit is loose on purpose. The insulating air layer between the fabric and your skin is a large part of the protection. Tight clothing transfers heat straight through.
- What is underneath matters just as much. Base layers must be cotton or wool. Synthetic athletic shirts, fleece, and nylon melt onto skin under heat and cause devastating burns, which is why they are prohibited on the line — including synthetic underwear and socks.
Boots
Lace-up, all-leather, at least 8 inches high, with a lug (Vibram-style) sole and a defined heel. Leather resists heat and embers; the height supports ankles on rock and slash; the lug sole grips ash-covered slopes; the heel lets you kick into a hillside.
Notice what is not on that list: steel toes are not used in wildland firefighting. Steel conducts heat directly to your toes and can hold cold in winter, so all-leather construction is the standard. Boots must also be in genuinely good condition, since a delaminated sole two miles from the road ends a shift and possibly a career.
Gloves
Leather, snug enough to work a tool and use a radio. They protect against blisters, splinters, hot embers, cuts on rock and metal, and brief contact with heated objects. Most firefighters go through several pairs a season.
Fire shelter
The fire shelter is a foil-and-fabric emergency device carried in a case on every wildland firefighter’s belt or pack, and it is the piece that Scouts always want to hear about. It is a last resort — deploying one means everything else has already gone wrong.
- What it is. A small tent-like shelter made of laminated layers of aluminum foil, woven silica, and fiberglass, weighing roughly four and a half pounds packed. The current version is called the New Generation fire shelter.
- How it works. The reflective outer layer turns back radiant heat, and the inner layers slow conduction, while the firefighter lies face-down inside on cleared ground breathing the cooler, cleaner air near the surface.
- What it cannot do. It does not make anyone fireproof. It offers very limited protection against direct flame contact and none against superheated gases if the seal is broken. Its purpose is to survive a short burnover in a cleared spot, not to shelter in place inside a fuel bed.
- How it is used. Firefighters practice deployment on a timer, targeting well under a minute, because a burnover gives no warning. Site selection is part of the drill: the largest available cleared area, out of chimneys and chutes, away from heavy fuel, in the black if possible.
Line gear and everything on it
- Pack (web gear or line gear) carrying water, food, headlamp, spare batteries, first aid kit, and the fire shelter.
- Water — often a gallon or more, because a firefighter can lose several quarts of sweat in a shift. Dehydration is one of the most common causes of injury on the fireline.
- Radio. In wildland fire, communication is protective equipment. A crew member who cannot hear a lookout is unprotected regardless of what they are wearing.
- Incident Response Pocket Guide (IRPG). The small orange reference book carrying the 10 Standard Firefighting Orders, 18 Watch Out Situations, LCES, and operational checklists you will meet on the next page.
- Headlamp, because shifts routinely run into darkness.
- Hearing protection for chain saws, pumps, and aircraft.
- Neck shroud that attaches to the helmet to cover ears and neck from embers and radiant heat.
Job-specific additions
- Chain saw operators add chaps or cut-resistant leg protection, a face screen, and hearing protection.
- Engine crews may add structural-style gloves and eye protection appropriate to hose work.
- Helitack and smokejumpers add flight helmets and, for jumpers, a padded jump suit with a wire-mesh face mask.

What Wildland PPE Deliberately Does Not Include
This is the part your counselor is most likely to probe, because it reveals whether you understand the trade-off.
No breathing apparatus. Wildland firefighters do not wear SCBA. The tanks are far too heavy for the distances and durations involved and would run out in minutes. Smoke exposure is managed by positioning — working upwind, out of the smoke, and rotating people out — rather than by filtering the air. It is a genuine unsolved problem in the profession, and long-term respiratory and cardiovascular health effects are an active area of research. Bandanas and shrouds keep embers and coarse ash off; they do not filter the fine particles that cause harm.
No heavy structural turnouts. The insulated, moisture-barrier coat and pants that protect a structural firefighter would cause heat stroke within an hour of wildland work. Heat illness kills wildland firefighters, so lighter gear that lets sweat evaporate is itself a safety feature.

A concrete way to show your counselor you understand the trade-offs
- Weight: Structural turnouts plus SCBA run roughly 45–75 pounds. Wildland PPE is a fraction of that, but the pack, water, and tools bring the total load back up.
- Duration: Structural gear is built for a short, intense interior attack. Wildland gear is built for a 14-hour shift, repeated for 14 days.
- Breathing: Structural firefighters carry their air. Wildland firefighters manage smoke through position and rotation.
- Heat threat: Structural gear resists direct flame and steam. Wildland gear is aimed at radiant heat and ember contact.
- The common rule: Both are useless if the wearer is in the wrong place at the wrong time.
