A direct attack involves applying water, retardant, dirt, or handline construction directly at the burning edge of a wildfire.

Tactical Execution & Conditions

• Methods: Firefighters scrape mineral dirt directly onto burning coals, smother flames with Pulaskis, or apply water hose lines directly to the flaming front.
• Conditions: Used when flame lengths are less than 4 feet, heat intensity is low, and smoke allows firefighters to work safely along the fire edge.
• Advantages: Minimizes acres burned and keeps the fire footprint small.
