Minimum Impact Suppression Tactics (MIST) employ firefighting methods that accomplish suppression goals with the least possible physical, environmental, or cultural damage to the landscape.

Key MIST Guidelines

• Firelines: Construct narrow handlines; flush-cut stumps level with the ground instead of uprooting trees; avoid using heavy bulldozers in wilderness zones.
• Water Use: Use water and natural wetting agents instead of persistent chemical retardants near streams and sensitive watersheds.
• Camps & Travel: Use low-impact camping practices, minimize tree cutting, and keep vehicle traffic restricted to established roads.
