Req 7a5 — Mop-Up Operations

Mop-up is the painstaking process of extinguishing or securing all burning embers, smoldering logs, and underground roots near the control line after the main fire front is contained.

Key Mop-Up Steps

1. Systematic Search: Search a specified distance inside the control line (e.g., 50 to 100 feet) for smoking stumps, roots, or heat sources.
2. Extinguish Heat: Break up burning logs with McLeods or Pulaskis, mix hot embers with mineral soil, and douse thoroughly with water.
3. Bare-Hand Test: Use bare hands (caution!) to feel ashes and soil to guarantee zero lingering heat remains that could rekindle a fire.
