Req 9a — Fire Readiness Plan
Develop a fire readiness plan for a wildland area with which you are familiar. The plan should include a map showing available resources, water supplies, natural and manmade barriers, and access. The plan should discuss fuel loads, available fire apparatus, structure protection needs, values at risk, medical and evacuation considerations and potential fire suppression tactics. Option A — Fire Readiness Plan
Option A asks you to design a comprehensive fire readiness plan for a local wildland area, such as your Scout camp, a county park, or a local nature reserve.
Readiness Plan Structure
Your plan should consist of a detailed map and a written report covering:
- Area Map & Infrastructure:
- Access roads, fire trails, and locked gates.
- Water sources (hydrants, ponds, dip tanks, streams).
- Natural barriers (rivers, rock bluffs) and manmade barriers (paved highways, powerline rights-of-way).
- Fuel Load & Hazard Analysis:
- Identify heavy fuel areas (dense pine timber, deadfall) vs light fuels (grass meadows).
- Values at Risk & Structure Protection:
- Identify buildings, cabins, historic structures, or power infrastructure requiring protection.
- Evacuation & Medical Plan:
- Designated primary and secondary evacuation routes and emergency medical helipads.
- Suppression Tactics & Apparatus:
- Recommended initial attack tactics (direct vs. indirect) and required equipment (Type 6 engines, hand crews).
